The battle between Clarín Group, Argentine’s largest media conglomerate, and the Argentine government rages on. While the actual cause of the feud is unknown, what is clear is that the clash has reached a new level, with each side organizing sets of attacks and counter-attacks. Héctor Magnetto, president and executive director of the media corporation, has spent the last couple of weeks denying various accusations made towards the company’s sectors. Magnetto rejected accusations of money laundering and other irregularities with the purchase of Papel Prensa. Additionally, the children of Clarín’s owners have undergone blood tests in face of accusations that they are among the adopted children of the disappeared during the dictatorship, according to Quilmes Presente, and ongoing reports from the BBC and The Independent. And most recently Buenos Aires has shut down Fibertel, the group’s internet provider. Julio De Vido, the planning minister, said Fibertel – which has 1 million customers and about a 25 per cent share of the market – was operating illegally and had “usurped” its license, according to newswire services.
