University doctors sell information to pharmaceutical companies

A story by James Goodman and Sean Lahman builds on an ongoing journalistic investigation on the financial ties between research universities and pharmaceutical companies. Reports from a small Rochester paper, the Democrat and Chronicle, have revealed the extent to which local university doctors are selling health-related “professional education programs” to medical conglomerates. The report revealed that “only a handful of states require pharmaceutical companies to disclose payments to physicians.” Therefore, with little or no formal regulation, a university doctor moonlighting for pharmaceutical company becomes a question of individual ethics: an issue tainted by six figure compensations from medical corporations, where the threshold for acceptable behavior may not draw a clear boundary to separate doctors from industry influence.
